On August 25, 2008, the South Korean Ministry of Knowledge Economy (MKE) announced that the National Standards Committee of Korea would implement a new national unified mark, the "KC" mark, from July 2009 to December 2010.

The "KC" logo means "Korea Certification". The thirteen mandatory legal symbols currently used in South Korea will be unified into the national unified symbol. This will simplify the certification process, reduce the cost of manufacturer certification, and develop the KC logo into a globally recognized brand.

Most electronic products sold within South Korea require an official product safety certificate. The Product Liability Law in South Korea is similar to the Product Liability Law in Europe, and the safety labeling regulations in South Korea are formulated based on the Korean Safety Law. The South Korean Security Law was amended on July 1, 2000, with four main modifications:

1. The South Korean security law divides electronic products into two categories: one requires mandatory certification of EK Mark (including household appliances, handheld tools, audio-visual information products, lighting fixtures, etc.), and the other requires non mandatory certification of K-Mark.

2. Factories located outside of South Korea are also required to undergo initial factory inspections and annual follow-up factory inspections.

3. South Korea's electronic product safety standards have been integrated according to IEC international standards.

Only manufacturers can apply to become certificate holders.
